You Got to Be Kidding Me!

More on Georgia and Russia

Posted in Politics by Stacy McMahon on August 24, 2008

I was going to post a link to an Asia Times article discussing the geopolitics of Russia’s invasion of Georgia, but this article by Kenneth Anderson – who’s been there and knows the people and politics – strikes me as more worthwhile. It’s a long read, and could use some editing for punctuation and paragraph separation (that’s not snobbery, just fair warning) but makes several good points.

First, the wars in that region are ethnic in nature, just like Bosnia, Kosovo, etc. The Georgians aren’t the ones doing the ethnic cleansing right now, mainly because they can’t since they’re losing. Second, and this is the more important point in my view, it doesn’t matter – Russia can’t be allowed to go back to its old habit of assauging its paranoid fantasies by invading its neighbors. I think Anderson is right that this isn’t Cold War nostalgia; Russia really is proposing to go back to the 18th-century way of geopolitics. I’m not sure what the answer is, but it does seem like this is the critical moment to stand up for a fairer approach.
